The Project Management Institute (PMI) offers a range of professional certifications for project managers and specialists in related fields. Its best-known qualification is the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, issued by PMI, which is recognised worldwide.
PMI Certifications: Project Management Professional (PMP)®
The PMP certification is one of the most widely recognised credentials in project management. It validates a professional’s ability to lead projects, manage teams and apply project management practices across different environments.
The certification is particularly suitable for experienced project managers who want to validate their knowledge and skills and demonstrate their professional expertise.
To qualify for the PMP exam, candidates must meet PMI’s education and project management experience requirements and complete 35 hours of project management education or hold an eligible CAPM certification. The experience requirement depends on the candidate’s educational background. For example, candidates with a secondary school diploma or equivalent generally need 60 months of project management experience, while those with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent generally need 36 months. PMI Certifications: Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®
The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is designed for people who are starting their project management careers or want to build a solid foundation in the discipline. It is suitable for aspiring project managers, team members and professionals who work with projects but have limited or no project management experience.
To qualify for the CAPM exam, candidates need a secondary school diploma or equivalent and at least 23 hours of project management education.

PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP)®
The PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP)® certification focuses on project risk management, a key discipline in successful project delivery. It recognises professionals who can identify and assess project risks, develop appropriate responses, mitigate threats and maximise opportunities to support project objectives.
The eligibility requirements depend on the candidate’s educational background. Candidates with a secondary school diploma or equivalent generally need 36 months of project risk management experience and 40 hours of project risk management education. Candidates with a four-year degree or equivalent generally need 24 months of project risk management experience and 30 hours of project risk management education. The qualifying experience must fall within PMI’s specified eligibility period.

PMI Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA)®

It recognises the knowledge and skills needed to collaborate with stakeholders, shape project deliverables and help ensure that project outcomes meet business objectives.
Eligibility requirements depend on the candidate’s educational background. Candidates with a secondary school diploma or equivalent generally need 60 months of business analysis experience and 35 contact hours of business analysis education. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent generally need 36 months of business analysis experience and the same 35 contact hours of education.

PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)®
The PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® certification recognises professionals who understand Agile principles and can apply a range of Agile approaches and practices. It is suitable for professionals working in Agile environments who want to demonstrate their knowledge of Agile methods and their practical application.
PMI-ACP eligibility requirements include project experience, Agile experience and formal education in Agile practices. Under PMI’s current eligibility framework, candidates generally need at least two years of Agile experience within the previous five years, along with 28 hours of Agile training. PMI Certifications: Program Management Professional (PgMP)®
The Program Management Professional (PgMP)® certification is designed for experienced professionals responsible for managing programmes. It recognises the ability to coordinate multiple related projects to achieve strategic objectives and realise benefits that would be difficult to obtain if each project were managed independently.
Eligibility requirements depend on the candidate’s educational background and project management experience. They include substantial experience in both project and programme management, assessed according to PMI’s criteria. Candidates with a secondary school diploma or equivalent generally need 48 months of project management experience, or an active PMP certification, and 84 months of programme management experience within the relevant eligibility period. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent generally need 48 months of project management experience, or an active PMP certification, and 48 months of programme management experience within the relevant eligibility period.
